Postby spanyid » Sat Jul 31, 2010 3:49 pm

took my outback for a early morning pedal tailor attacking bait so out went a bushy popper and whack great little fight about a 25-28cm tailor a pb for me kept it too try never eaten tailor and won't bother again. so i decided to go for a troll only had a lure i think it's a timberwolf diver mag freeby in a baitfish colour. had a huge strike and a screeming run trying to get the other lure in watching line rapidly disapear.right other lure in, time to fight it had to have close to 100mtrs of line out (6lb braid 6lb fluro bream gear)started to give chase my heart pumping what the hell have i got
brain ticking ....big tailor .... jew .... wishful thinking... hang on it's circling under me trying to see it silver flash then off again peel another 20mtrs and towing me.goining thru my mind don't panic bring it in slow back the drag off a little and then up comes a salmon my first it was about 3-4kgs kept it to to try never tried and again won't keep another

Well done Spanyid.

Those sammies sure do pull hard and I know what you mean by "heart pumping".... it's all good stuff.
I occasionally get in amongst schools of them bust up the surface offshore in the yak and drag the metal slug through. Every hook up is a great "heart pumping" experience, especially when they are 70cm plus....whoa go fish go.. They are great fun on light gear.

Another thing. If you don't like the strong flavour - bleed well (imediately), remove skin and all red meat (under the skin) and soak fillets in milk in the fridge for an hour before cooking. Takes the edge off and they are good quality fish, just don't over cook or they will be too dry. Or you can make cakes out of them!

Hi Spanyid

Sounds like some good action there catching the fish. :ll:

Reminds me of the time Old Salty and I were out with our girls about eight years ago and had some massive action
catching tailor along the runway. After looking at his sounder and spotting a bait ball he would say we should have
some action here, and sure enough lines just went off everywhere !! :ha:

We had so much fun catching fish that day. :bg:

Becca and Old Salty caught a few tailor too down Narooma when we were there. We found the best way to eat them
is next day BUT don't freeze as they don't freeze well. Skin them, cut out the bloodline and pan fried in butter.
May also be lightly crumbed. :smi:

I agree with Jumma, you can make fish cakes out of the salmon.

Cheers Julie

Totally agree with Julie. :ha:
The best Tailor I have eaten was one that was given to me by a friend. It was in the fridge, so I put it in mine to eat the next day. It was superb and better than frozen. That was about 25 years ago & I have never forgotten. :ha:
Also on the Salmon topic. I think they are tough as rubber! :mad1: I will now give my secret out on cooking them. Hope I haven't already? :md:
But what I do is fillet & skin them. Roughly cut the blood line out as it is quite tender compared to the white meat. Obviously if you don't like the dark meat, then cut it all out. Then cut the fillet into about 4 pieces per fillet & bash the fillets with a meat mallet like you would do with a chicken snitzel. Not too much in case it all breaks up. But close to that point. Then crumb and fry like chicken snitzel. Wallah!! :ll: Salmon Shnitzel. :tong: Yum, Yum. Must be the German in me! :re:
Don't forget. It is a secret. Don't tell anyone but us Yakkers! :smi:
Oh by the way. Good catch mate. Must have been reel fun too! It's amazing how a fish can grow to legal size when its stretched! :snic:

Congrats on the salmon and tailor. I caught my first salmon a few weeks ago and then last weekend went and targeted them at Salts Bay - Swansea Channel. Great fun on bream gear. I havn't eaten one before but I have one very happy and spoilt cat who has been eating fresh fish for dinner for the last few weeks.
