Midcoast Outing - Lake St Clair 13-15 OCT 17 - All Welcome!

#1 Post by pdfarrell » Thu Aug 17, 2017 10:12 am

Time to Dust off your Cicadas & Polish your Sugapen... it's on Again! :lek:

This years trip to Lake St Clair will be on the weekend of the 13-15th of October.
This is two weeks after the long weekend, and the week after school holidays finish.

It's a great weekend, so if you've never been I heartily recommend that make the effort to come along.
Fishing on dark over the last couple of years has been great.

Please indicate if your coming by commenting below.

I have taken annual leave on the Friday, so will get there early/mid-morning.

Cheers,
PF

Will try and get out for the weekend. I fly fish it regularly on foot so would be interesting in a yak.

I would love to come join you for this one, unfortunately my leave pass will be already used, as I`m heading to Nundle & surrounds for a Cod session with my Bro`s In-law for the Oct long weekend.
I dare not ask SWMBO for another in the same month. I have to stay in the good books if I wish to get a PA in the future.
Hope you all have a great time & I look forward to seeing the pics.

Looking like a nice little roll up for this years trip!

If there's anyone contemplating the weekend, I can't stress enough how much fun they are.
I have made some great mates on these weekends, and there's always plenty of laughs.
If you've never fished for bass, this weekend is the perfect opportunity to give it a go!

I'll also state that this weekend is not just for Midcoasters, if there are any KFDU-ers interested, please feel free to come along.
Just send me a pm so I know who to expect and to look out for.

Thought I'd share a bit of info for anyone that has never been to Lake St Clair before.

Camping will set you back $22.50 per night per site, for up to two people.'
There are showers and toilets, but as far as food ( & drink) goes, you will need to be self sufficient.
More info on St Clair here... http://www.singleton.nsw.gov.au/Index.aspx?NID=139

Fishing is best early morning and evening, however if you are going to fish after dark I URGE you to have a light on your yak.
A good LED head lamp is also a necessity.
A sounder is recommended, it makes finding structure easier which obviously will help you catch fish.
I will also have my GPS, as it can be quite disorientating if you venture any distance and lose sight of the campground at night.
(It can be VERY dark, but the stars are amazing!)

As far as lures go, doing a google search on "lures for impoundment bass" will give you a tonne of tips.

Personally, I've found diving lures that get down 3-4m in dark colours, (especially purple) work well trolling the edges of weed beds.
Purple feral cats and stump jumpers come to mind. But make sure you bring a few other colours too!

On my recent trip I had success throwing Zman Slimswims on 1/8 jigheads tight to the bank, but I'm sure any small bait (paddletail) profile plastic would work.
http://www.kfdu.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=50779

A few beetle/jig spins will also come in handy.

In low light periods and after dark, the surface fishing can be insane, any sort of surface lure will work well.
I've had great success on Fish Candy Jelly Cicadas, Sammies and the humble old black jitterbug.
I recommend surface lures with their own action after dark, (cicadas, surface crawlers etcc) as you don't have to worry that you've got the action right.
Last year the surface action was out in open water, and not limited to the banks! There was a stereophonic chorus of bass blurping all around!

On my recent outing, there were promising signs on the surface, and I really expect the fishing to be great once it starts to warm up a little.

Please note, I'm not a seasoned bass fisho by any stretch of the imagination, I've just noted what has worked for me.
If any one else has any tips or suggestions, in particular tips specific to St Clair, please share the wealth by posting them below.

Cheers,
PF

Hi all
Would be keen to attend this weekend.
Only been kayak fishing couple of seasons and only bass/river fishing, never fished dams/impoundments so will be all new to me.
Also first midcoast outing so new to group as well.
Have put in for some leave at work, planning to get there Thurs pm, unfortunately will have to leave late Sat or very early Sun for another commitment at Denman.
Only have a 2.8m eBay cheapie so hope it will be suitable for location. Have lights and a dodgy portable sounder setup, minimal experience with the sounder, might need a few pointers there.
Noticed from attendees profiles mostly Hobie's so hoping my eBay cheapie will be allowed to paddle with the group
Looking forward to meeting new faces and new fishing experience.
Regards.
Terry

G'day Terry, more than welcome regardless of what you paddle! Look forward to catching up.

Knees, 2yackers and Blackant will probably be set up down on the right when you first come into the campground.

Cheers,
PF
