Saturday 17th January Green island

#1 Post by twhyte » Fri Jan 16, 2015 10:06 am

Heading out from wello point tomorrow and seeing what green island has to offer. Launch at about 5am til about 10am. Heading out alone so if anyone would like to tag along just pm or post reply. Will be fishing the flats on the rising tide and a bit of fly fishing then moving deeper as the tide moves out.
Cheers

Hey twhyte,

I've already planned to chase flatties in Tingalpa Creek in the morning
I'm only new to this kayak fishing gig and your post caught my insterest
Very keen to hear what you chase/get out there and what techniques you use
Also cusrious about the water condistions - I've only got a small yak

Cheers

No worries mate if the weather stays good then I will post something up. It's only a very short distance approx 2klm from the wellington point ramp. Good luck in the creek

A few fish from yesterday Millo. Just fished hard body bream lures on the flats and reef edges.

Good stuff. I could only rouse up a single flathead from around the mouth of Tingalpa Creek. Not a stellar debut performance in the yak. I'm taking it down to more familiar ground in NSW on the long weekend.

If only I had seen this earlier, I launch at Wello all the time, definitely heading out this weekend, prob have to be Saturday though as I have stuff on Sunday and Monday (Aust Day and all). Keen to try Tingalpa, havne't been in there yet, otherwise I'll doodle around wello for a few hours at day break.

So far I have caught nothing there though, plenty of bites, and two big bust offs, but no keepers...

How do you go paddling that far? I'm buggered by the end of the markers.

Yeah weather dependant I'll post on here, but I'll either stick to the end markers or try Tingalpa but most likely the end markers at Wello.

Sym0 have no trouble paddling that far I just pace myself and it helps if you troll a few lures along the way. I usually island hop all the way to mud island and back

That's great effort! How do you find the waves mate with such a trip. My biggest worry would be a chance of weather

Its normally flat on a sub 5kt wind morning till 10am, just like a large lake really. The weather this week looks horrid, will have to wait and see what happens this weekend.

kevin19870316 the waves can be a bit difficult on the way back and you get very wet. But I try too choose my days carefully. Common sense is all you need. Always tell someone your plans etc and I carry a handheld radio just incase. Can't beat time on the water though mate.

Great to see Green Island in the trip reports again, and come on, it's not that far! I used to check the afternoon breeze and launch from Wello or from White Island making sure the wind was at my back on the way home. The area between the mud banks (off the Passage) and Green isn't very productive but Green was great.

If you are trolling just keep an eye on St Helena - presume it's still a green zone.

The paddle to Mud is a different story through, that's 30k+ (round trip) at best which ever way you approach it.

Nice lippers twhite!
